The Vanguard PH-111V is no longer available. In its place we have found the Benro S2 to be a better, smoother pan head for just a few dollars more.

The Vanguard PH-111V is a lightweight compact 2 way pan head that is ideal for running spotting scopes, binoculars and cameras off of. At only 14oz it is exceptionally lightweight for a fluid pan head. Dual locking knobs adjust the tension on both the pan and tilt movements so you can set just the right amount of tension for whatever you have on it. I have run everything from video cameras to 80mm spotters with digiscoping set ups and I have been extremely impressed with it. The PH-111V also features a lock in place quick release plate so that even if the lever gets hit the quick release plate will not fall off the head.

  • Two way fluid head
  • Extremely smooth pan and tilt movements
  • Locking quick release plate
  • Long handle for precision and torque
  • Will easily handle any spotting scope on the market
  • 1/4" and 3/8" thread compatability
  • Weight 14oz!

Over the last 4 or 5 years I have tested dozens and dozens of tripod heads looking for the perfect combination of being extremely functional and smooth while at the same time being lightweight. Running video cameras and spotting scopes being able to pan around smoothly is a major factor to me. I have been testing this head out for the last few months and I think I have found the perfect tripod head. My only complaint about the head is the quick release plate does not have a thumb lever on it so that you can tighten by hand. Fortunately I found out that the Promaster 6160 quick release plate is the exact same dimensions and works better than the Vanguard plate in my opinion.

I did a bunch of research for a new tripod and pan head.  I talked to Steve and he suggested a Silk 624 Pro and this Vanguard pan head. I'm sure it will be a great setup for years to come.

Foot loose September 26, 2015

This head is just a bit better than average. There isn't a point at which the horizontal pan is "snug" enough to move yet not wobble.

Pan head was just ok. Smooth when panning horizontally but sticky when moving vertically. Unfortunately I decided to return it.

The vanguard head didn't work out as well as I had hoped for my application. SS archery was great to work with and exchanged it hassle free! Thank you and you earned my business for future purchases.

Sticky in up/down panning August 6, 2015
Reviewer: Duane Karren from Salt Lake City, UT United States
Very smooth horizontally but sticky vertically. Steve said this was about as good as it gets in this price range  and offered a full refund if I wanted to return it.  I did and am presently shopping for a more expensive pan head.
